The Bushland Management Strategy is a vision and a statement of guidance for the future wellbeing of the natural resources of Sandon Point.
There have been many historical impacts upon Sandon Point ranging from industrial development, to clearing of vegetation, land and water degradation. Today there is the added pressure for development and residential subdivision.
This strategy has two main purposes. The first is to highlight the existing conservation values of the natural features of Sandon Point. The second is to strengthen community involvement in the custodianship of Sandon Point through a clear statement of management and planning that is aimed at consolidating ongoing community consultation.
Actions over many years at Sandon Point have shown that the Illawarra community already embraces sustainable natural resource management as a fundamental consideration. That enthusiasm can be nurtured through knowledge, with further community involvement fostering a strong local and regional identity with Sandon Point.
Even though economic pressures continue to diminish Sandon Point’s natural and cultural assets, environmental and legistlative frameworks formalise community
expectations to protect these assets, and should influence the decision-making processes much more strongly than they have to date.
This Strategy was conceived to be one of the many voices of the community that seeks to be heard within these processes.
