GREENS SUPPORT SANDON POINT ‘PICKET ON THE MOVE’ ATTEMPT TO TALK TO MCLEAY

The Illawarra Greens supported the Sandon Point ‘Picket on the Move’ today, in their visit to Heathcote MP Paul McLeay’s office in Engadine.

Greens Candidate for Heathcote Jill Merrin said, “since the Sandon Point picket was burnt down last year, campaigners have formed a ‘Picket on the Move’, which has taken the campaign to Parliament, to the streets and now to the office of the Member for Heathcote.

“Mr McLeay is claiming that he and the Labor Government are stopping overdevelopment in the northern Illawarra, but this is a hollow claim - the Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor, signed off on the Sandon Point concept plan just before Christmas.

Mr McLeay cancelled an appointment to meet with the Sandon Point representatives a few days prior to the government’s approval being granted to the developers. A few weeks later, in early March, he snubbed an invitation to a Sandon Point site walk and sixth anniversary celebration.

“The Sandon Point Coalition is calling on Mr McLeay to show that he really is as concerned about this issue as he claims,” said Ms Merrin, “and meet face-to-face with his constituents.”

“As the local Member of Parliament for Heathcote, Mr McLeay needs to show the people of the Illawarra that he is willing to talk to them about the important issues, rather than hiding away in his office,” said Ms Merrin.
