Picketers Bare All vs Sartor’s Naked Tyranny to Support Court Case Fundraiser
23 August 2007
Sandon Point Community Picket members are being forced to extremes and baring all vs Planning Minister Sartor’s naked tyranny in approving the Sandon Point, Bulli, Stockland/ARV concept plan against his own department’s recommendations.
Local resident, Jill Walker is challenging Sartor’s decision in court. Protesters wish to publicize the upcoming Art Auction fundraiser set for Saturday 1 September at the Mori Gallery, 168 Day St. Sydney, near Town Hall, at 3 pm. So this Saturday they are doing a Spencer Tunick (without the glacier) at Sandon Point. This is the extreme citizens now have to go to to get the ear (and eye?) of our politicians.
Protesters are planning to bare their souls (and everything else!) from 3pm onwards Saturday 25 August. Their aim is to highlight – in the words of one protestor – “the vulnerability of this unique habitat to the naked greed of those who would destroy it for profit”.
Planning Minister, Frank Sartor, with recent legislated power over large-scale developments, has approved an additional suburb size development on this site.
Bulli resident, Jill Walker, is taking him to court. Jill said "Minister Sartor ignored all findings and recommendations for a regional park made by his own department’s Commission of Inquiry. His approval also disregarded expert government consulting agencies. Sandon Point is a sensitive coastal floodplain with heritage turpentine forest, and significant Aboriginal cultural significance. The community wants our COI recommended regional park.”
Jill Walker's court challenge for the Sandon Point community will be represented by the Environmental Defenders Office. The case is scheduled for hearing on 18 and 19 September.
“This is our last chance to save Sandon Point from Sartor's dictatorial Part 3A legislation,” says Jill. “This State government totally ignores human and cultural rights and environmental, social and global warming impacts. We have to fight for our civil rights against all undemocratic laws."
