Embassy Raises Alarm As Public Not Told of Health Risks

 

Work Cover inspectors have closed off the south east corner of the controversial Stockland McCauley Beach development due to the exposure of a large amount of broken Asbestos sheeting.

 

Yesterday a team of 10 workers in protection suits were in the contained area picking up asbestos and placing them into large take away bags.

A Sandon Point to Bellambi Point Bike Ride will be held on Sunday 28th August, starting at the Sandon Point Aboriginal Tent Embassy at 10am.

This family event intended to bring together the broad local community and Local Government Candidates to show respect for Aboriginal Culture across the Illawarra.

Community are invited to come out and support the key importance of recognition of Aboriginal rights as Traditional Owners of the Illawarra in all aspects of Wollongong City Council business, particularly planning.

The Sandon Point Aboriginal Tent Embassy (SPATE) is locked into a big legal battle with Stockland Developments over breaches of the Project Approval arising from Stockland’s current works on the new McCauleys Beach residential development site.

 

The ‘Kennedy vs Stockland and the NSW Minister for Planning, LEC 40880 of 2010’ case commenced in November 2010 and will have the final two days of hearing before Judge Sheehan in the NSW Land and Environment Court on the 26th and 27th May 2011.

An agreement with Stockland Development has seen Lot 2003 Hill Street, Sandon Point signed over to Council as public open space.

 

Wollongong City Council's General Manager, David Farmer, said that this was a great result for the community.

Anglica Retirement Villages will dispose of its site at Bulli where it had proposed a seniors living community.

ARV had proposed the development of a retirement village comprising some 250 independent living units, a residential aged care facility and community centre.  The proposal included protection of the existing turpintine forest, riparian corridors, setbacks and wetlands protection covering 3.84 hectares, or 47% of the site.
