Sandon Point update post Commission of Inquiry: June 2008

- Commission of Inquiry – Feb to June 2003 recommends a Regional Park.
- COI report released scaling back proposed development footprint. Increased protection for riparian corridors, bushland areas, Turpentine Forest and land adjoining Gibson Park, north of Hewitts Creek. It recommends that Aboriginal Heritage values need further evaluation and sites in the eastern section be protected – Oct 2003
- Council and Department of Planning call for a review of the COI claiming the recommendations are “unworkable” – Feb/March 2004
- Greens question the motives of developer Stockland in donating more than $30,000 to political parties in during 2003 -2004 financial year. Stockland donated $19,250 to the NSW ALP and $11,000 to the NSW Liberals. (Northern Leader Feb 2005)
- Planning Minister Craig Knowles appoints “planning expert” Charles Hill to review COI findings and recommendations. This is in response to Council and land owners unsubstantiated concerns the COI report is “unworkable”. May 2005
- No Compromise at Sandon Point: Over 200 residents pack Thirroul surf club for a public meeting with Charles Hill to call for the establishment of Sandon Point Regional Park - Northern Leader July 2005
- Charles Hill “independent review” of Sandon Point COI released. Planning Minister Frank Sartor branded the 2003 Sandon Point COI findings a failure.
- It is estimated that the development footprint increased by an additional 15 ha as a result of the Hill Report and ammended concept plan. – Nov 2005

- Planning Minister Frank Sartor declares Sandon Point as a site of State and Regional Significance. The Minister and Department of Planning replaces Council as the development consent authority for the site - Apr 2006
- Sandon Point concept plan put on public exhibition by Department of Planning on behalf of Stockland and Anglican Retirement Villages. July 2006
Development proposed for the site include:
Stockland area:
50 townhouses built on two separate parcels
180 detacted homes and
Four storey, 80 unit apartment building overlooking Gibson Park
Anglican Retirement Villages area:
Four storey aged care home for 120 residents
250 independent living units up to 3 storeys
Parking for 265 vehicles
- Planning Minister presented with 750 submissions objecting to Sandon Point Concept Plan. – Northern Leader Aug 2006
- A second batch of submissions objecting to the Sandon Point Development Proposal was handed to NSW Greens Upper House MP Ian Cohen in Sydney. This brings the total number of submissions to 1529 – or one in every three local households in the region. – Northern Leader Aug 2006
- Council exhibit draft plan to reclassify the south –west corner of Thomas Gibson Park Thirroul, from Community Land to Operational Land. The reclassification is proposed enablingWrexham Rd to be extended to serve the Sandon Point development site. – Nov 2006
- Planning Minister, Frank Sartor approves Stockland and Anglican Church Concept plan at Sandon Point four days before Christmas– Dec 2006
- Council reclassify SW corner of Gibson Park to allow Stockland to have road access to the northern part of the site – Feb 2007
- Bulli resident, Jill Walker launches legal action to overturn Planning Minister Frank Sartor’s approval of the concept plan for Sandon Point – Mar 2007
- McCauleys Beach – Sandon Point Headland formally recognised as an “Aboriginal Place of State Significance” by Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) – May 2007
- Art show and auction run by the community raises about $15,000 for legal costs, at Mori Gallery Sydney on 1 September 2007. The show was publicized by a "Naked Protest" photoshoot by Tyler Freeman Smith on Sandon Point headland - August 2007.

- Judge Biscoe rejects Approval because no study of impact of climate change on a known floodplain. Minister must require a study. November 2007

- Department of Planning place Sandon Point Residential Subdivision and Aged Care Facility Proposal on Public Re-Exhibition. - Supreme Court hearing set down for 24th July 2008, everybody welcome to attend. Minister Sartor has recently changed the EP&A Planning Act to gain more control over the states planning and development process.
